Kate Devaney is an Immortal from Kildare, Ireland and the former wife of Duncan MacLeod.
Biography
While living in Ireland in her pre-Immortal days, Kate was a woman who really loved traveling. In 1712, her life would change forever after meeting Duncan MacLeod and Connor MacLeod, when her coach stopped and three thieves tried to con her and her friend out of their gold, she would meet Duncan MacLeod.
Kate in 1715
Three years passed and Kate and Duncan MacLeod would marry and become husband and wife. After the celebration, Connor spoke to Duncan on knowing that Kate was a pre-Immortal and asked Duncan what he will do.
Later on that night, Duncan, remembering what Connor told him, would really change Kate's life forever. He attempted to stab her in her sleep to trigger her Immortality, but she woke up just in time to see him as the one who stabbed her. When she revived, in horror, she fled while Duncan attempted to tell her what she was.
Joining Kell
Over the years, Kate bacame a whore in a brothel, and was found by Jacob Kell, who held a grudge against Connor MacLeod. She seemed to have been left with the impression that, had no one killed her, she might have had children, despite Immortals not being able to even before First Death.
Kate, along with Kell and his gang, Robert "Cracker Bob" Cassidy, Winston Erhuero, Jin Ke, Manny Rieta and Carlos Dash would work together, hunting down many Immortals over the years so Kell could take their heads.
Endgame
Faith in the present
In 2004, Kate, now using the name Faith, was running a fashion designing company in New York City. Behind the scenes, she went with the gang to the Sanctuary to find Connor MacLeod and Kell beheaded the other Immortals at the Sanctuary. Kate eventually ran into Duncan MacLeod at Connor MacLeod's loft and Kell's gang attacked Duncan. But when Kell arrived, Duncan got shot by Dash and fell out of the window. Kate could only watch as Kell beheaded Dash for his actions.
Kell and Faith
Afterward, Kate accompanied Kell to the graves of the Immortals from the Sanctuary, where both MacLeods were visiting. After Kell defeated Connor in a duel and warned Duncan that he would be his next target, Kate left with him.
Later on, Kate got a visit from Duncan at her fashion studio and he tried to talk to her. She told him how much she resented him and how Kell had helped her in her journey. As the night went by, Kate visited Duncan at his hotel room and seduced him to see if she still had feelings for him. Duncan told her when she was leaving that maybe she could forgive him, despite that it might take years or centuries. However, there was a blessing of Immortality, there was always tomorrow, even for them.
Kate, returned to Kell's hideout, where Jin told her it was only a matter of time until Kell killed them all. Later, Kate, Kell, and the other Immortals, had a dinner, which ended with Kell beheading the others, but telling Kate to leave.
Aftermath
Kate reunites with Duncan.
After Duncan beheaded Kell, they both reunited at a fashion show Kate was overseeing. At that moment, it seemed Kate had finally forgiven Duncan. Duncan asked her how she wanted to proceed with any sort of relationship with him, which he replied: trust. Duncan said that she could always trust him, to which Kate abandoned her new name and took back her original name. The two shared a kiss, hinting they would rekindle their marriage and live forever.
Personality
Kate is a complex individual driven by resentment, bitterness, and a deep sense of betrayal after being made Immortal against her will. In her pre-Immortal life, she was a woman who enjoyed her independence and loved traveling.
Upon becoming Immortal, Kate was horrified by the nature of her "first death" at Duncan's hand and fled from him, spending centuries consumed by anger and hatred. This anger is a primary motivator for Kate's actions in the film.
She is highly manipulative, willing to use her past relationship with Duncan to manipulate his emotions and joined Kell's faction using her alias "Faith" while working against the MacLeods.
However, she is capable of regret and forgiveness. A core part of Kate's conflict stems from her deep unhappiness about being an Immortal. She expressed immense pain over the fact that she will never have children or grow old and die naturally, feeling that her life as a mortal woman who loved traveling was stolen from her. After Kell's defeat, Kate reconciled with Duncan, suggesting a capacity to move past her bitterness and rebuild trust, indicating a desire for a life with some semblance of normalcy and love.
Overall, Kate is a tragic figure, whose personality is largely defined by the trauma of her forced Immortality and her struggle to come to terms with an endless life she never wanted.
Fighting Style
Kate uses a Damascus steel rapier, though does not fight as much.
Trivia
- Kate is the only female Immortal in a feature length film.
- Other female Immortals only appeared in the series and its spinoff.
- Kate was originally named "Alexis," and most of the flashbacks with her occurred in Shanghai instead of Ireland.
- The original theatrical version had Kell kill Kate, but the producer's cut has her live and is actually the canon one.
- Juliet Landau was in the running for the role of Kate/Faith before Lisa Barbuscia was cast.
- Kate was supposed to appear in the movie 'The Source', though Lisa declined to reprise her role, resulting in the mortal Anna Teshemka being written in instead.
- During the film, Duncan relays to Anna that he had to watch the women he loved die "Tessa, Kate..." but 'The Source' is so outside the accepted Highlander universe, that it is not regarded as canon even by the producers and actors, who refer to it as a bad dream.
